Dataset Abstract

We performed an extensive vegetation survey of the central plots of each CSP in GNNR in 2008. Herb layer communities can serve as ecosystem functioning variable, which is of importance for all community and ecosystem-based statements. We made a detailled description of the herb layer communities in the central plot of each CSP. Herb layer includes all vascular plant species and individuals below 1m height. The vegetation survey includes the identification of all individuals, species abundance was counted, species were classified according to their life form. The presence of tree and shrub seedlings (i.e. woody recruits) in the herb layer can act as an indicator for regeneration.

Dataset Design

The CSPs were established in May - June 2008 in the Gutianshan Nature Reserve as well as outside the Nature Reserve. The CSPs have a size of 30 x 30 metres and are exposed to the north. The central plot hold a size of 10 x 10 metres and is situated in the centre.

Spatial Extent

The study was performed in the 27 Comparative Study Plots (CSPs) in Gutianshan Nature Reserve.

Taxonomic Extent

The vegetation record dealt with herb layer only, i.e. vegetation below a height of 1 metre. While the vegetation record (i.e. cover and abundance of each species) was performed at central plot level the additional vegetation list (i.e. occurance of herbaceous species) was done at whole plot level.

Measurement Circumstances

The vegetation survey always was done before other subprojects were working in the central plot. This ensure best possible results for seedling numbers.

Data Analysis

With this data, herb community analysis from the CSPs can be performed. Mind that the cover values only apply to the central subplot.
