Dataset Abstract

Leaf toughness assessed on individual trees of species growing on the Experimental Sites of BEF China. For each tree seven leaves were sampled in most cases. Every single value for every leaf is given. Exceptions were made in species with very small leaves (e.g. Loropetalum chinense). Here, we present mean values for every individual from several leaves (indicated in the Column "Individual Sample")

Dataset Design

Leaf samples were taken from sun-exposed branches with an expandable pruner. Only completely developed leaves were sampled, without visible herbivore damage and preferably free of leaf fungi. Seven leaves were collected per individual and the majority of species was sampled in five to seven Plots within the experimental site. Every species was sampled only from one individual per plot, wherever suitable. Rare species had a lower number of individual replicates.
