Individual soil lipid fractions from site A and B from the Main Experiment.

Dataset Design

Plots in the Main Experiment of the BEF-China experiment are planted with trees in distinct diversity levels with the same tree individual density. Soil samples were taken between individual trees… Soil was analysed using machine x and procedure y.

Taxonomic Extent

bacterial or fungal communities based on lipid indicators, the fungal to bacterial ratio, or total microbial biomass (lipid biomass). See column descriptions for more detail about individual lipid indicators.

Data Analysis

Microbial biomass: all lipids less than 20 carbons in length were summed to give the total biomass. Lipids were otherwise used according to specific microbial indicator groups and either the abundance (nmol lipid g dry wt-1) or in relative abundance (abundance divided by total lipid biomass). Data were then analyzed in R using multivariate (NMDS) or univariate (co-variate regressions and ANOVA) methods. The columns of CSP name, depth, and horizon name are explanitory variables, the response columns are the lipid biomass, fungal to bacterial ratio, and the individual fatty acid indicators --- note that the age classes analyzed here are not the most current age classes. They were changed, but analysis was already deep underway on the paper at that point.

Main Experiment plots have a size of 1 mu, which is about 25x25m^2 in horizontal projection. Pilot Study Plots have a size of 1x1 m^2. Research plots on the main experiment have a "p" in front of their IDs and then a 6 digit code: Plots in the main sites A and B are named according to their position in the original spreadsheet, in which they were designed. They consist of 6 digits: _1st digit_: Site (1:A, 2:B), _digit 2and3_: southwards row: as in spreadsheets the rows are named from the top to the bottom; _digit 4 and 5_: westward column: as in the original spreadsheet, but the letters are converted to numbers (A=01, B=02); _6th digit_: indicator, if the plot has been shifted a quarter mu.
