Dataset Abstract

This research is designed to test the species-genetic diversity correlation hypothesis. This data describes the distribution of DNA haplotypes of acorn weevil in comparative study plots (CSPs), used to confirm the species number of acorn weevils and their host range. Weevil samples were collected in the year 2010. This data comprises haplotypes of mitochondrial DNA COI of acorn weevils in 25 CSPs.

Dataset Design

To obtain samples of seeds weevil, we firstly collected Fagaceae plants seeds which can be found in CSPs. The seeds were placed in plastic vials by each species and each CSP separatively, and were taked into to laboratory for the collecting of weevil larvae.

Spatial Extent

Acorn weevil oviposite into seeds of Fagaceae plants, and larvae feed on seeds before leaving to overwinter in the soil. In forests, the plant species diversity may have strong effects on the population size, populatioin isolation and individuals immigration, and hence the population genetic diversity of weevil. Gutianshan NNR comprises a large area of secondary subtropical forests, due to the differences in recovary duration, the forest stands therein are undergoing different successional stages (Hu & Yu 2008), harbouring different plant species diversity and making it a good place for species-genetic diversity correlation study. Samples of weevil larvae were obtained from fagaceae seeds in CSPs in the year 2010, and sequence data of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) were collected by polymerase chain reaction and sequencing.
