Dataset Abstract

This file contains data about the absolute and relative mass loss of defined pieces of wood over one year. Furthermore, the data give an overview about whether termites or fungi were involved in the degradation.

Dataset Design

The aim of this campaign (a bachelor thesis) was to investigate different influences of wood decomposition. Within the Ecoscape approach especially topographic features are investigated, plus possible effects of planted tree diversity. In 2012 two samples (one coarse mesh one fine mesh) sampled per VIP and VIPREP, respectively.

All data were collected on the experimental study sites (A and B) in the VIP and VIPREPs. The wood pieces were the same size and placed on the plots (four pieces per plot, for two harvests) in 2011 in two different bags: one in a coarse bag (mesh size 7 mm), the other one in a fine bag (mesh size 0.25 mm), to exclude insect. The pieces come from different trees. For every tree a specific fresh weight / dry weight ratio is known, to calculate the dry weight of deposited samples in 2011. In 2012 we calculated fresh weight / dry weight ratio and the absolute as well as the percentage massloss from 2011 to 2012. First the entire sample was weighted (fresh weight), to calculate a conversion factor of fresh to dry weight a stem disc was taken at the edge of the piece and one at the middle of the piece. These values were averaged, because an open edge degrade faster than bark-protected middle sections. In addition we determined whether termites or fungi were present.

Temporal Extent

Wood deposition in the field was conducted between November 28th to 30th 2011. Retention was from September 18th to 28th 2012.
