Dataset Abstract

Litter production and subsequent decomposition are key processes in C and nutrient cycling of forest ecosystems: the physical and chemical breakdown of organic matter during decom-position releases both CO2 and nutrients, the latter being again available for plant nutrition. The nutrient pool sizes of leaf litter thus determine the potential for future nutrient supply to the plants. These pool sizes could be affected by plant species diversity due to differences among species in litter quantity and quality, or in timing of litter inputs.
