Dataset Abstract

Leaves of eight species (see 'taxonomic extent') were sampled from 71 plots on site A of the BEF China Main Experiment at Xingangshan, Dexing County, PR of China.
Per plot 1 to 16 individuals were sampled and samples were analyzed for P, C and N contents. This dataset is part of a master thesis (see below) that aimed at investigating whether tree diversity can overcome the effects of nutrient limitation on forest growth in young afforested tree communities. Therefore it is in close interjunction with the datasets on soil nutrient status in the respective sampling sites (http://china.befdata.biow.uni-leipzig.de/datasets/331; http://china.befdata.biow.uni-leipzig.de/datasets/561).
In cases where little material was available, emphasis was put on the measurement of P contents.

Dataset Design

Leaves were dried at 40°C and finely ground. Carbon and Nitrogen was measured after dry combustion with a Elemental Analyzer truspec, Leco, St. Joseph, MI, USA; Phosphorus was measured after digestion with concentrated nitric acid with the molydenum-blue method (Murphy and Riley, 1962)

Spatial Extent

The experimental study plot Site A is located near the village Xingangshan in Dexing County near to Jiangxi province and was planted spring 2009.
