Dataset Abstract

Leaf traits and chemicals from tree and shrub species in the main Experimental Sites of BEF-China (Site A & B). Including secondary metabolites (total phenolics and tannin concentration) as well as leaf tensile strength (leaf toughness). Ardisia crenata is missing in this dataset: no individuals could be sampled. Note that all values are average calculated from another dataset.

Dataset Design

Leaf samples were taken from sun-exposed branches from vitally suitable individuals. Only completely developed leaves, without visible herbivore damage and preferably free of leaf fungi were sampled. Four leaves were collected per individual, except of those with pinnate leaves. In this case only 1 leaf was sampled/individual. Every species was sampled only from one individual Plot in each Site, where possible. Rare species that occurred with less than five individuals (e.g. Castanopsis carlesii and Euonymus myrianthus) had a correspondingly lower number of replicates.
